Opening our Time Capsules

On Monday, this week, the Seniors walked into class after lunch to a surprise...we would be opening the time capsules we created 4 years ago, when we were in grades 1 and 2.
We had many predictions about what we would find or remember putting in the capsules.

The excitement we felt about opening these treasure troves and what we discovered inside can be seen on our faces...

If you were to put something of YOURS into a time capsule, what would you choose and why?

Sovereign Hill: A journey back in time

On Friday, we left school very early to make our way to the historic village of Sovereign Hill, in Ballarat.
Sovereign Hill is set on an original 2 acres of gold fields. It teaches students and teachers about the history of Australia and it shows the way life was lived at that time in a very in depth way - Tia
It was a very long trip to SH and once we got there we were all very excited to explore the gold fields and to go through all the facts and to learn more about the Eureka Stockade and about the gold rush - Cooper T.
We did many fun things like learning about Australian History with a guy called Chris. We also went to the mines and we went to the lolly shop. Some things I learnt were that they goats there, because they used those animals to make food. I also learnt that you could melt quartz and put it in a mould and cool it down and it helped to make a bar of gold - James.
I found that this excursion was really fun and interesting because we learnt about Australian History. We also did gold panning and we watched a man melt gold and mould it into a brick. We got into groups of 3 and put on a costume and told the rest of the group about who that person was -Isabella
SH was fun because learnt about Australian's History through being shown what it was like during the gold rush in Victoria. My favourite was going gold panning and I found some gold - Natalie

Melbourne Museum History Excursion

Yesterday, we visited the Melbourne Museum, especially to see the "First Peoples" Exhibition in the Bunjilaka Cultural Centre http://museumvictoria.com.au/bunjilaka/visiting/first-peoples/
Cam showed us how to use the app, Book Creator, on the mini iPads that we shared and Bernard guided us around this new (but permanent) exhibition. Along the way, we took photos and interviewed each other with a variety of materials that explained the early history of a land we know as Australia.

What was good about using iPads and Book Creator at the Museum?
  • It’s like writing facts down, but it stays as a movie on the iPad – Cooper
  • Mini iPads are good because it’s like making a movie and learning new things – Sienna
  • Mini iPads are good to use because you don’t have to video and you won’t lose what you created – Natasha
  • It was good because you could do voice messages and take photos. It was a good place because there was a man talking and lots of good things to take photos of. It was good because we haven’t used mini iPads before and they trusted us not to break them – Jenny
  • I think Book Creator is good because you don’t just take photos of things, you describe them – Jake
  • It wasn’t just getting to learn about the museum, but we also got to learn about using iPad minis and Book Creator
  • This was a good learning opportunity for Middle S – Jacob
  • We were learning when Bernard was telling us information and we were learning about Aboriginal History – Natalia
  • We got to learn a new app which is good because we got to explore more and have more fun – Molly
  • It made it easier because I didn’t have to write – Riley
  • I liked the Book Creator because we were having fun, but at the same time we were practising photography – Jamie
  • It was good to use the app because it was easier to take pics of what we were learning, instead of writing it down – Adol

Here are the movies we made...

Grandparents Morning

Last Friday, our grandparents joined us in the classroom, to share in and help us with our learning about history (or 'The Olden Days' as we call it!). It was a wonderful experience for all involved.
Jacob - I learnt that toys could have straw in them. I also learnt that cricket is a very old game.
Madeline - I learnt 4 things: toys can have straw in them, some buildings can be made of plaster, buildings were small because they didn't have many materials and some dolls were made out of plaster. Also, Lego is quite old
Angelo - I learnt that some houses were made of mud, hay and logs.
Seb - I learnt that boys wore a tie and a white shirt all the time
Riley - I learnt that boys used to get smacked with a leather strap, if they were naughty, because they though boys were tougher than girls. There were lots of old board games in the olden days
Jessica - I learnt that for dessert children would eat biscuits
Brandon - I learnt that my nonna had broken up biscuits
Travis - my grandmother told me how a horse and cart works (with a big whip)
Joe - You could go to the shops with one penny and buy a jar of broken biscuits
Pat - I learnt that my grandpa got chased around his backyard with a cricket bat when he was naughty
Ava - that in the olden days Lego people only had a face with a smile and eyes
Madison - Clothes were made out of felt. Also, I learnt that boys got smacked on the bottom and girls got smacked on the hand
Amelia - I learnt that many buildings that we still have were made a long time ago. There's a building in the city that's really small but really old.
Maria - I learnt that Romans used chariots to ride
Jack - I spoke to my nana about the olden days and she told me that she was born at home
